Ponda Battle Tightens

The Ponda bypoll is turning increasingly layered, with social equations and political undercurrents adding to what is no longer a simple triangular contest. Alongside BJP, Congress and AAP, the possibility of a rebel candidate and new entrants could push the election into a four-cornered fight.

Discontent within the BJP has surfaced after Dalvi was denied a ticket, with indications he may take up the matter with the chief minister. If this dissatisfaction translates into a rebellion, it could split the party’s traditional vote base. Observers say such a split, particularly among core supporters, may indirectly benefit Congress.

The Bhandari Samaj, a key voter group in Ponda, is expected to play a decisive role. Any fragmentation in this vote bank — especially if influenced by rebel candidates or local sentiments — could hurt the BJP’s prospects, given its reliance on consolidated support.

Adding another dimension is the sympathy factor linked to former MLA Ravi Naik. Emotional connect and legacy appeal could influence sections of voters, potentially aiding the BJP if effectively mobilised. However, the entry of former South Goa MLA and ex-tourism minister Mickey Pacheco’s candidate, along with the yet-unclear stand of the Revolutionary Goans Party (RG), could further complicate the arithmetic.

With caste dynamics, possible rebellion, and multiple contenders in play, the Ponda bypoll is shaping up as a tightly contested battle where shifting loyalties and vote division may ultimately decide the outcome.
